The third release from Buxton Records, A Path Within is the first collaboration between label boss Adam Swain and experienced studio hand James Hunter. The duo capably balance depth, groove and emotion across three tracks which represent both artists equally.

Swain’s DJing experience and Hunter’s production skills fuse to create an emotive journey out of the titular track, which incorporates plaintive pianos, bubbling effects and effusive piano within an exceptionally clear arrangement. Check The Step follows suit to a degree, but rests more heavily on a syncopated groove and crisp melodic stabs. An altogether darker affair, it’s bursting at the seams with detail and will certainly pull at the hips.

By contrast, Sneaky Circus shows both artists in a more playful mood reminiscent of cheeky Bar25 Lotharios. Lively, heavy drums with bags of character and a little less seriousness than we’d normally expect from the Buxton boys lend it an exceptionally party friendly vibe.
